  3.                              THE ALTAR OF INCENSE                               
  4.                                                                                 
  5.          The altar of incense  occupied the  middle space  near to and in front 
  6. of the inner veil  in the Holy place (Exodus 30:1-6; 37:25-28; 40:5).           
  7.                                                                                 
  8.          In construction it was a  simple box of acacia wood,  two cubits high, 
  9. one cubit wide, and one cubit broad, with a top, and horns like  the brazen al- 
  10. tar, the whole being covered with gold.  It had no grate,  because the fire did 
  11. not come  directly in  contact with it.  It had a  molding around the  edge and 
  12. rings to carry it, and staves.                                                  
  13.                                                                                 
  14.          Upon this altar neither  burnt offerings  nor meat  offerings were al- 
  15. lowed to be offered,  nor drink offerings to be poured,  but it was used exclu- 
  16. sively to burn incense upon morning and evening.
